Neurofeedback is a technique that has been proven to be helpful with recovery from anxiety, brain injury, ADD, addiction, seizure disorders, depression, and post-traumatic stress syndrome. In addition it appears to be helpful with autoimmune disorders, autism, and most other nervous system disorders..
Neurofeedback is also an effective tool for enhancing attention, awareness, personal growth, and the effectiveness of meditation and other techniques associated with spiritual and personal development.
Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that uses sensors on the head to amplify brain wave patterns. These are then analyzed so that they can be fine tuned. Sound and visual feedback are provided to aid the brain in learning to increase or decrease certain brainwave frequencies in order to improve function. Creating an appropriate balance can help in achieving increased mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
The brain, which is the seat of the mind, is highly complex and flexible, full of potential, and with the ability to recover from accidents, difficult life experiences, and imbalances in its operating mechanisms. As the central processing organ of our nervous system, it is through developing our brains abilities that we can reach our highest potential as human beings. These abilities include the control and focus of attention, the processing of information, the creation of images, the experiencing of emotions and sensory input, and the coordination of these functions with each other. Increasing our awareness and control of our mental, physical, and emotional processes is basic to improving our functioning in the world of careers and relationships, and also our spiritual progress.
Neurofeedback is used to train the brain in accessing different kinds of attention and awareness, such as the focused, analytical state necessary for many school and work related tasks or the relaxed, more diffuse awareness needed for meditation or for finding creative solutions to major life questions. With repeated sessions, the connections between the brain cells of affected areas alter, leading to permanent change. Clinical conditions tend to require 30 to 60 sessions to make changes in the brain patterns permanent, although a few follow up sessions each year are recommended in some cases. Sessions generally last an hour, although the first session requires an hour and a half. Fees vary with the condition and what is required, but are usually $120/hour, with the first session costing $180.
